The Konso Tribe

The Konso, also known as the Konsita, are the Lowland East Cushitic-Speaking ethnic group primarily in habiting south-central Ethiopia.

The Konso speaks the Konso language (also known as affa xonso ) as the Mather tongue. Konso is divided into four dialects:Kholme,Duuro,Fasha  and Karatti. It is sharea close lexical similarity with Dirashe.

In entire Africa, these people are known by their hard working which revealed on their agricultural land.

The Konso cultural landscape is characterized by extensive dry stone terraces bearing witness to the persistent human struggle to use and harness the hard, dry and rocky environment. The terraces retain the soil from erosion, and collect the maximum of water, discharge the excess, and create terraced field that are used for agriculture.

The stone walled villages and settlements (Paletas) of the Konso Cultural Landscape are located on high plain or summite selected for their strategic and defensive advantage. These towns are circled by one and six rounds of dry stone defensive walls, built of locally available rock.  The cultural spaces inside the walled villages, called Moras, retain an important and central role in the life the Konso people. Some Konso walled villages have as many as  17 Moras.

These the tone walled villages and terraces are actually registered on UNESCO world heritage site on 2011.
